The first official visit to Morocco by the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nadia Calviño, has served to highlight the role that the North African country plays as a bridge between the African continent and Europe.
A strategic partner for Europe
During the final event of her visit to Morocco, which coincided with the 21st anniversary of the bank’s permanent presence in the country, Calviño met with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita.
Following the meeting, the EIB President stated that the institution would continue to support the North African country on its path towards growth, prosperity and social development, and described Morocco as a “strategic partner for Europe”.
According to Calviño, the country is today “a pillar of stability, security and shared prosperity for Africa and the European neighbourhood” for the entire region. The President and former Spanish minister also noted that this visit forms part of efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between the EIB and Morocco.
Specific transport plan
The EIB President also met with the Minister for Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah, to take stock of this cooperation and analyse the details of the European institution’s investment plan.
During her visit to Rabat, Calviño signed a series of agreements with the Moroccan Government combining European loans and grants specifically earmarked for transport and structural resilience.
Specifically, the transport plan includes funding totalling 365 million euros, intended to strengthen the resilience of Morocco’s rail and motorway networks.
Of this, 15 million comes from a European grant specifically earmarked for climate adaptation measures on the railway network, to be managed by the Moroccan National Railways Office, and 50 million in the form of a loan from the EIB.
The remaining 300 million from this specific transport and infrastructure plan is earmarked for improving the resilience and safety of motorways, and will be managed by the Moroccan National Motorway Company.
This initiative forms part of the EIB’s strategy to support partner countries in moving towards safer and more sustainable transport.
12,000 million over 50 years
Since the start of its cooperation with Morocco, some 50 years ago, the EIB has already mobilised more than 12,000 million euros in support of a wide range of sectors, from SMEs and renewable energy to health, water and education.
On the subject of education, Nadia Calviño paid a symbolic visit to a state school in Rabat to attend a musical performance by a group of young people, as part of the “Morocco 88” project.

This initiative is a youth project involving extracurricular music clubs in Moroccan secondary schools that promotes education, social cohesion and youth development; it is supported by the Moroccan Ministry of National Education, with backing from the European Investment Bank itself.
The President took the opportunity during her visit to give an interview to the public news agency MAP, in which she praised the economic reforms implemented under the reign of Mohammed VI, which have strengthened Morocco’s macroeconomic and financial framework, thereby boosting the confidence of international investors and enabling large-scale investment to be mobilised.
