This ascent to second place marks a noteworthy achievement for Morocco, indicating its first-time surpassing of South Africa in tourism rankings. The report credits Morocco’s success to its savvy use of social media marketing and strong digital presence.
Moreover, the country’s effective crisis management, particularly following the September 8 earthquake that impacted regions like Al Haouz, Chichaoua, and Taroudant, has significantly boosted its tourism profile. This capability to navigate crises and adapt quickly is positioning Morocco as a frontrunner in developing future tourism strategies.
The report further emphasizes that Morocco has shown stable performance across various tourism-related sectors, solidifying its attractiveness as a travel destination. It highlights that Morocco stands just behind Egypt, which holds the 25th position in global rankings.
Countries like Ethiopia and Uganda are also making strides in tourism. Ethiopia has climbed to ninth place thanks to better connectivity and social media efforts. Uganda has bounced back to the 11th spot and is poised to enter the top 10 with robust tourism growth.
In contrast, South Africa has slipped to third place, facing ongoing challenges from the pandemic and social media performance issues. Ghana has dropped to 14th place, suffering from a decline in tourism revenue and reduced online presence.
In Europe, Italy continues to lead the pack, followed by Spain and Germany. Slovenia and Poland are making notable progress, particularly Poland, which is recovering well despite the ongoing regional conflict.
Over in Asia, Japan maintains its status as the top destination, with Thailand and India following closely. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are experiencing positive growth trends, while destinations like Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Taiwan are seeing declines due to lingering pandemic effects.
In the Americas, the United States holds its ground as the number one destination, followed by Mexico and Canada. Costa Rica, Brazil, and Puerto Rico are also performing well, whereas Cuba ranks 16th. Aruba and Colombia are on the rise, whereas Jamaica and Peru are facing hurdles in their tourism sectors.
