The American Chamber of Commerce in Morocco recently held its annual gala in Casablanca to celebrate the strengthening strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco.
A significant highlight of the evening was the 20th anniversary of the US-Morocco Free Trade Agreement, which serves as a vital component of the two countries’ economic relationship.
During the event, Ryad Mezzour, Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, called for a reassessment of the agreement to achieve a more balanced trade relationship. Despite notable growth, with trade volumes increasing 2.5 to 3 times over the last two decades, Morocco still imports considerably more from the US than it exports.
Mezzour emphasized the vast opportunities available for American companies to enhance their market presence in Europe, Africa, and beyond, suggesting that Morocco could serve as a strategic gateway for US businesses aiming to expand into these regions.
The US-Morocco partnership extends beyond trade, as illustrated by Younes Sekkouri, Morocco’s Minister of Economic Inclusion, who highlighted the extensive cooperation between the two nations. The bilateral trade has spurred the creation of thousands of jobs and facilitated significant technological transfers. Moreover, the partnership has led to the establishment of 15 vocational training centers, boasting an impressive employment rate exceeding 80% for young graduates.
US Ambassador to Morocco, Puneet Talwar, spoke of the robust economic ties, underscoring their role in promoting Morocco’s stability and growth. Talwar praised Morocco’s strong macroeconomic management, political stability, and advanced infrastructure, particularly referring to Tanger Med Port, the largest in Africa, as crucial assets for US investors.
He pointed out that Morocco acts as a gateway to Africa, providing essential opportunities for American businesses looking to explore new markets.
The gala brought together prominent dignitaries and business leaders from both nations, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing the collaborative efforts that benefit both economies.
