The 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicks off Saturday, featuring a redesigned trophy, a major increase in prize money, and an unprecedented three-nation East African hosting, CAF said in a press release.
Tanzania will face Burkina Faso in the opening match at 6:00 (Morocco’s time) in Dar es Salaam.
The month-long tournament will run through August 30, bringing together the best home-based players from across the continent.
For the first time, the CHAN will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. Matches will take place in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Kampala, and Nairobi, with the final scheduled for Moi International Sports Center in the Kenyan capital.
CAF has raised the total prize pool to USD 10.4 million, a 32% increase from the previous tournament, with the champions receiving USD 3.5 million, up 75%.
Defending champion Senegal return alongside two-time winners Morocco and DR Congo. Other top contenders include Nigeria, Algeria, Zambia, and hosts Kenya and Uganda.
Group A features Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia. Group B includes Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and debutants Central African Republic. Group C is comprised of Uganda, Algeria, Guinea, South Africa, and Niger.
Group D features Senegal, Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria.
The third-place match will take place August 29 in Kampala, followed by the final on August 30 in Nairobi.
With ticket sales underway and fan engagement campaigns active in all host cities, CAF seeks to deliver a festival of African football that showcases domestic talent and unites fans across borders.
