Morocco has tightened its lead as Mauritania’s biggest African supplier, taking more than 35% of its imports from the continent in the third quarter of this year. These figures come from Mauritania’s statistics agency, which just released its latest foreign trade report.
Behind Morocco, Algeria and Egypt were the next biggest African suppliers. Algeria provided 16.2% of Mauritania’s imports from the continent, while Egypt followed with 14.9%.
According to the report, Mauritania’s African imports during this period were mostly food products, along with construction materials, equipment, and various chemical products.
Overall, Mauritania’s trade with the world increased by 5.6% in the third quarter. This growth was driven by a 7.7% rise in exports and a 3.94% increase in imports, even though the country still recorded a trade deficit of more than 5.4 billion ouguiyas.
The statistics agency also confirmed that European countries remain Mauritania’s main suppliers, taking a little over 36% of total imports.
Europe is also Mauritania’s largest customer, buying 37.4% of its exports during the same period. African countries came second but far behind, accounting for only 16.6% of Mauritania’s exports.
Within Europe, Spain dominates the trade relationship, capturing more than 33% of Mauritania–Europe exchanges. It is followed by Switzerland with 18.9%, and Belgium with 14.7%.
Asia ranked as Mauritania’s second-largest trading region, representing 26% of the country’s total trade. China leads Mauritania’s Asian partners, followed by Japan. Together, they represent more than 70% of Mauritania’s trade with Asia.
As for closer regional ties, trade with Maghreb countries made up 9.1% of Mauritania’s overall trade in the third quarter. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) accounted for 20.9% of Mauritania’s trade within Africa.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates stands out sharply in the Middle East, taking more than 98% of Mauritania’s trade with that region.
