Millions of football fans in India and China could miss watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup as broadcast rights remain unresolved weeks before the tournament begins, according to Reuters.
In India, a joint venture between Reliance and Disney has offered $20 million for the rights. The bid is far below FIFA’s initial expectations, reportedly around $100 million, and has not been accepted. Sony, which also held discussions, ultimately chose not to submit an offer, citing commercial concerns.
No broadcaster has yet been confirmed in China either, despite the country’s significant viewership. During the 2022 World Cup, China accounted for nearly half of global digital and social media viewing hours.
The lack of broadcast agreements in both countries is unusual so close to the tournament, which kicks off on June 11. In previous editions, broadcast deals were secured well in advance, allowing time for promotion and advertising sales.
Industry sources said the lower Indian bid reflects expectations of reduced viewership, as most matches will be played in North America and be broadcast late at night in India. Football also attracts less advertising revenue in India compared to cricket, further impacting valuations.
