As the travel industry continues its rebound, the demand for seamless and cashless transactions is on the rise. Alipay+, the cross-border mobile payment service from Ant International, has experienced a threefold increase in transaction volumes this year, highlighting the shift in consumer payment preferences.

Changing Consumer Behavior

The pandemic has significantly altered how people approach payments. With a decline in cash usage, mobile wallets and QR code payments have surged in popularity, particularly in Asia. Launched in 2020, Alipay+ enables travelers to use their preferred local payment apps when abroad, providing a familiar and convenient payment solution.

Expanding Horizons for Mobile Payments

Douglas Feagin, president of Ant International, notes that mobile payment apps were initially limited to local use, but they now cater to millions of global users. This expansion is driven by three main factors: user-friendliness, trust, and transparency. Travelers no longer need to exchange currency or download new apps; they can rely on their trusted payment systems.

As of late 2024, Alipay+ partners with over 30 payment platforms and connects 1.6 billion consumers to more than 90 million merchants across 66 markets.

Global Adoption Beyond Asia

While Asia remains at the forefront of mobile payment adoption, interest is growing in regions like Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. Notable examples include Italy’s Tinaba and the open QR code payment system Bluecode. Partnerships, such as the collaboration with UEFA during recent championships, have further boosted transaction volumes in cities like Berlin and Munich.

Ant International has also formed a three-year partnership with Tottenham Hotspurs, aiming to engage the Asia Pacific fanbase while linking European merchants with Asian travelers. A recent announcement revealed that Italian fintech Tinaba has integrated with Alipay+ Mini Program solutions.

Emphasizing Local Experiences

Alipay+ usage reveals emerging travel trends, particularly towards supporting local vendors in places like Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia. This not only empowers local communities but also enhances cultural experiences for travelers. The goal is to expand merchant coverage, allowing mobile payments at various locations like shopping malls, street markets, and food centers, ultimately driving tourism to less frequented areas.

Shaping the Future of Travel

As digital payments become increasingly integrated into travel, their role extends beyond simple transactions. Alipay+ is evolving to include destination marketing, rewards programs, and various lifestyle services. For instance, the collaboration with Thailand’s Tourism Authority has led to the development of the Alipay+ D-hub, a customizable mini program designed to promote lesser-known Thai destinations directly to Chinese tourists.

This mini program features valuable travel and cultural information, along with recommendations for local merchants, enriching the travel experience while directing tourism to underrepresented areas.
