Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has secured two major solar projects in Morocco, featuring integrated battery storage, thereby expanding its footprint in the country’s energy market, “Renewables Now” reported.
The Riyadh-based company tendered the winning bid for the Noor Midelt II and Noor Midelt III projects. Each plant will have a capacity of 400 megawatts (MW) and a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 602 megawatt-hours (MWh), capable of discharging up to 230 MW over two hours. The projects will be located near the town of Midelt in the Atlas Mountains.
The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) awarded the contracts under a Build–Own–Operate model. ACWA Power will be responsible for designing, financing, constructing, operating, and maintaining the facilities under a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement.
The Noor Midelt II and III projects are part of the larger Noor Midelt initiative, which initially included hybrid photovoltaic and concentrated solar power (PV-CSP) plants. The 800 MW Noor Midelt Phase 1 was awarded in 2019 to a consortium of EDF Renewables, Masdar, and Green of Africa. But due to delays, Morocco’s Energy Ministry and grid operator ONEE moved to replace the CSP component with PV or battery systems.
In March 2024, ACWA Power reported a forced outage at its 150 MW Noor III CSP plant in Ouarzazate due to a leak in the molten salt tank. The plant resumed operations in April 2025, according to MASEN’s LinkedIn update.
ACWA Power currently operates seven power plants in Morocco with a total capacity of 765 MW. The company says it has invested nearly 12 billion Saudi riyals (USD 3.2 billion) in Morocco.
