After having led Morocco’s U17 national team to its first-ever title at the Africa Cup of Nations, Moroccan Coach Nabil Baha said in a recent interview with Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) that Moroccan football has entered a new era.
“There’s a Moroccan school of coaches now,” Baha said. “They’re well-trained through programs from the Royal Football Federation (FRMF) and [they] benefit from foreign experts sharing their knowledge [with players]. This dynamic is directly driving results in our national teams.”
Baha highlighted the growing strength of local coaching, pointing out how former players are turning into skilled leaders. FRMF has stepped up certification programs, and international experts regularly contribute to training seminars. That mix, Baha said, is creating coaches who not only understand the local game but think globally.
Morocco’s progress does not stop at coaching. Rather, it is investing in other areas that contribute to performance. Baha credits a national investment in youth development for the U17 team’s recent success. Regional academies and the Mohammed VI Football Academy have built a steady pipeline of players, many of whom are now moving to European clubs and turning professional.
“We’re seeing the results of years of groundwork,” he said. “The players are smart, adaptable, and mentally strong. They didn’t just win, they won while playing several different tactical systems.”
With the U17 World Cup coming up in November, Baha plans to stay aggressive. The team will participate in international tournaments and scouting tours ahead of the big event. The focus, he says, remains on growing, not just participating.
“We have to teach them to chase wins,” Baha said. “They need to understand that success isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a mindset.”
