Morocco was elected vice chair of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) governing council on Monday during the 179th FAO Conference in Rome. The term runs through 2029 and will give Rabat a stronger role in shaping the agency’s political programs and strategic direction.
The FAO Council made up of representatives of 49 member states oversees the execution of the agency’s policies and guides its long-term priorities. Ambassador Youssef Balla, Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN agencies in Rome, said the vote shows the trust of the member states in Morocco’s work inside the FAO’s governing bodies.
Balla told Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) that Morocco’s team had carefully developed the 2026-27 work program and budget adjustments, including the reallocation of USD 5 million to priority areas, such as the Technical Cooperation Programme and the Codex Alimentarius. He said the shift strengthens support for developing countries and will improve the FAO’s overall performance.
He also praised efforts to speed up the agency’s digital transformation, reinforce environmental sustainability and improve results-based management.
The conference will address FAO reform and options to strengthen the agency’s governance and internal systems and improve the FAO’s ability to respond to rising global food insecurity.
The talks come at a time of pressure on food markets and widening climate impacts. Delegates are also engaging with the UN’s “UN 80” reform initiative, which seeks to modernize the multilateral system and update its institutions to respond to current global needs.
