The Moroccan government has agreed to a request from trade union confederations to postpone a technical committee meeting on pension system reforms that was originally scheduled for April 6, sources told Hespress. The session with officials from the Moroccan Pension Fund (CIMR) will now take place after the upcoming April round of social dialogue.
The April round of talks between the government, the three main trade unions, namely the Moroccan Labour Union (UMT), the Democratic Confederation of Labour (CDT), and the General Union of Workers in Morocco (UGTM), and representatives of employers, including the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) and the Moroccan Confederation for Agriculture and Rural Development, is set to begin on April 17.
Melouki Mokharik, secretary-general of the UMT, confirmed that the April 6 technical committee meeting was suspended “pending the outcomes of the social dialogue.” He noted that the unions officially received the government’s invitation to the April session after no talks had been held in September.
The postponement request followed discussions with Nadia Fettah Alaoui, the minister of economy and finance, who “understood the situation,” Mokharik said. The CDT had formally contacted the minister on April 1 to request the delay, citing the need to address social and economic pressures before resuming pension reform talks.
Chalid Houyer Alami, secretary-general of the CDT, explained that the request comes amid rising fuel prices and their direct impact on living costs and workers’ purchasing power, making increases in wages and pensions a priority.
Union leaders are expected to push for a unified demand for higher wages during the April social dialogue round, reflecting growing pressure from soaring prices of essential goods and declining purchasing power.
