Morocco strengthened its position as Spain’s leading supplier of fresh fruits and vegetables from outside the European Union during the first four months of 2026, as Spanish imports from non-EU countries continued to rise in both volume and value.
According to data from Spain’s Department of Customs and Excise, analyzed by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers-Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants (FEPEX), Spain imported fresh Moroccan produce worth €710 million ($826 million) between January and April, up 5.6% from the same period in 2025.
Morocco exported 232,993 metric tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to Spain over the four-month period, making it Spain’s second-largest supplier overall after France, which shipped 494,547 tons. The kingdom nevertheless retained its position as Spain’s largest supplier from outside the EU.
The figures come amid broader growth in Spain’s imports from third countries. Between January and April, Spain imported 895,791 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables from non-EU suppliers, a 6.5% increase from a year earlier. The value of those imports rose 9% to €1.503 billion ($1.75 billion).
Overall, Spain imported 1.7 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables during the first four months of the year, valued at €2.095 billion ($2.44 billion). Compared with the same period in 2025, import volumes increased by 6%, while their value rose by 4%.
FEPEX data highlighted the growing role of non-EU countries in Spain’s fresh produce market. Suppliers outside the bloc accounted for 72% of the total value of Spain’s fruit and vegetable imports during the period, compared with 28% for EU member states.
By volume, non-EU countries represented 52% of Spain’s imports, surpassing the 48% share held by European suppliers.
Among non-EU exporters, Peru ranked second behind Morocco, with exports to Spain valued at €183 million ($213 million), followed by Costa Rica with €113 million ($132 million) and Brazil with €87 million ($101 million).
According to FEPEX, the figures underscore the growing importance of third countries in supplying Spain’s fresh produce market, with Morocco remaining the country’s leading non-EU trading partner in the sector.
