Five players from Morocco’s U19 national handball team disappeared while participating in a youth tournament in Poland, held in late June, according to media reports.
The players reportedly fled from the team’s base without informing officials.
In response, the National Authority for the Fight Against Corruption in Sports called the incident a “sporting and diplomatic scandal,” and urged an immediate investigation.
It also suggested the possibility of “internal collusion,” noting that a man over 30 years old, who was present with the delegation, is suspected of having ties to irregular migration networks.
The Moroccan Handball Federation is also facing criticism amid the scandal, as no official accompanied the players or staff to oversee their stay, reports added.
This is the second similar case in under ten days. Two players from Morocco’s U21 national handball team vanished during the World Championship held in Poland from June 18 to 29.
During a layover in Bologna, Italy, before reaching Poland, Oussama Hakaoui and Moubarak Messaoudi, both from Ittihad Nouaceur club, left the team’s hotel and have not been heard from since.
Authorities are now calling for greater oversight and accountability from sports federations during international events.
