Morocco’s National Food Safety Office (ONSSA) on Tuesday denied reports in European and Moroccan media claiming a blanket suspension of Moroccan cherry tomato exports following a Dutch health alert, local media reported.
Reports claimed that Dutch authorities issued a Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASSF) notice on September 10 concerning metallic contamination in a single lot of Moroccan cherry tomatoes. The lot was reportedly withdrawn from the market.
Adressing the claims, an ONSSA official has said the Netherlands intercepted only that specific lot and suspended its import, describing the action as routine, and called the allegations of a wider suspension of Moroccan tomato imports across the European Union “entirely false.”
He added that alerts on Moroccan fresh products are rare. In 2025, the RASSF recorded 478 alerts on fresh produce, only nine of which involved Moroccan products, just 1.8% of the total, reflecting Morocco’s compliance with international food safety standards.
A producers’ representative added that Moroccan cherry tomato exports to Europe are limited at this time of year due to seasonality, but continue normally. He pointed out that a new shipment was delivered to the European market without issues on Monday.
ONSSA and industry representatives underlined that Moroccan exports remain safe and fully aligned with international requirements.
