French cinema giant Pathé and Morocco’s leading retailer Marjane Group announced on Monday a strategic partnership to build new cinema complexes in major cities across the country, according to cinema news specialised outlet “Boxofficepro.”
The deal follows Pathé’s debut in Morocco in late 2023, with the opening of its multiplex at Californie Mall in Casablanca. That facility features eight screening rooms, including an Imax Laser, a 4DX theater, and a dedicated space for local arts.
“Morocco is a great country for cinema. Many films produced by Pathé were shot here,” said Jérôme Seydoux, President of Pathé. “We will build very modern cinemas, or more simply, we will build together the best there is.”
The move aligns with Marjane’s plan to enhance its malls with more leisure and entertainment offerings. The group operates 200 retail outlets and manages 500,000 square meters of commercial space in over 40 cities, drawing 100 million visitors annually.
“By combining Pathé’s cinema expertise with our strength in commercial property management, we’re creating a cinema network tailored to evolving audience expectations,” said Ayoub Azami, CEO of Marjane Group. “This will drive growth at the intersection of retail, entertainment, and culture.”
Pathé is already active in France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Morocco. The company is receiving the “International Exhibitor of the Year” award this June at CineEurope in Barcelona.
