A political standoff in Moroccan House of Representatives has delayed the launch of a parliamentary inquiry into alleged irregularities in the country’s red meat market, as lawmakers clash over how the probe should be structured and led.
The proposed fact-finding mission, requested by the opposition Haraki group, seeks to examine pricing imbalances, the effectiveness of government measures, and concerns that interventions have failed to reduce costs for consumers.
The issue has taken on added urgency ahead of Eid al-Adha, when demand for livestock typically surges and prices come under increased scrutiny.
Opposition lawmakers argue the inquiry is essential to ensure transparency and accountability. Idriss Sentissi, head of the Haraki parliamentary group, said the delay in forming the mission raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest and undermines parliament’s oversight role.
“These mechanisms exist to uncover the truth and inform public opinion on controversial issues,” Sentissi said, adding that activating the probe is both a political and moral obligation.
However, the head of the parliamentary Committee on Productive Sectors said the initiative is facing procedural and practical challenges, particularly due to disagreements between the majority and opposition over the scope and leadership of the mission.
The opposition insists it should chair the inquiry, as the initiating party, while the majority favors a different framework tied to a broader investigation into public subsidies for livestock and meat imports.
The impasse has created what lawmakers describe as an unprecedented procedural gap, complicating efforts to formally establish the mission.
The dispute comes amid wider concerns about Morocco’s livestock sector, which has been affected by prolonged drought, fluctuations in domestic supply, and reliance on imports. Government subsidies aimed at stabilizing the market have also drawn scrutiny over their impact and transparency.
For many households, rising meat prices remain a pressing issue, particularly as Eid approaches, making the stalled inquiry a politically sensitive matter.
Despite the deadlock, parliamentary officials say the proposal has not been abandoned, and discussions are ongoing to find a compromise that would allow the inquiry to proceed before the end of the legislative term.
