Royal Air Maroc has launched a dozen new regular routes that will connect Moroccan airports such as Casablanca, Tetouan, Tangier and Nador not only with Madrid and Barcelona, but also with other cities such as Bilbao, Alicante and Malaga.
Development plan
The launch of these new regular air routes is part of the development plan promoted by the Moroccan flag carrier to strengthen connectivity between the northern region of the country and the main Spanish airports. This is the company’s most ambitious plan in its more than half a century of existence.
The aim is to consolidate Royal Air Maroc‘s role as a strategic air bridge between Morocco and Spain, as well as to strengthen the connectivity of the Casablanca hub to allow travellers from Spanish airports to access the Moroccan airline’s African and international network.
Strengthening Spanish-Moroccan connections
The presentation of these new routes, which took place in Madrid on Friday, 13 February, was attended by the Moroccan ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich. The diplomat noted that ‘the launch of these new air routes reflects the strengthening of bilateral relations between Morocco and Spain, two neighbouring and friendly countries with a shared history, deep historical ties and increasingly close and diversified cooperation’.
For Benyaich, ‘ours is a lasting and mutually beneficial partnership. The competition is not between Morocco and Spain, it is in other regions, and together we can make more progress in Asia and America.’
The ambassador referred to the Moroccan diaspora, the Moroccan citizens residing in Spain: “Spain is home to a large Moroccan community, the largest foreign community in terms of numbers. Most are integrated and are the leading contributors to Social Security. In this context, air connectivity plays a very important role. It is not just about creating new routes: it is about building bridges, shortening distances, bringing people closer together and strengthening ties. It is the answer to the mobility needs between Morocco and Spain.”

Target: 31 million passengers
For his part, the Vice-President of Royal Air Maroc, Amine El Farissi, emphasised the growth that this strategic plan represents for the company: “We are moving from being a traditional airline with a hub in Casablanca to a transcontinental airline. We are going to go from transporting 7.5 million passengers to more than 31 million, with an aircraft acquisition programme until 2037 that will increase our fleet to 200 units. This is the most important project in Royal Air Maroc’s more than 50 years of history.”
Regarding the increase in activity that will result from the organisation of the 2030 World Cup between Morocco, Spain and Portugal, El Farissi explained that “we have started in Spain with the development of these new routes four years before the World Cup in order to serve as many destinations as possible. Our goal is to increase the frequency and capacity of existing routes to offer up to four or five weekly services, if necessary. All of this will be developed according to the mobility needs of the population, in order to provide maximum connectivity when necessary.”

New routes
The new regular routes being launched by the company are as follows:
- Tetouan-Barcelona, with two weekly flights, starting on 27 March.
- Tetouan-Malaga, with three weekly flights, starting on 28 March.
- Tetouan-Madrid, with three weekly flights, starting on 28 March.
- Tangier-Malaga, with two weekly flights, starting on 6 July.
- Tangier-Madrid, with two weekly flights, starting on 7 September.
- Tangier-Barcelona, with two weekly flights, starting on 3 July.
- Nador-Barcelona, with two weekly flights, from 10 September.
- Casablanca-Bilbao, with three weekly flights, from 1 April.
- Casablanca-Alicante, with three weekly flights, from 1 April.
In addition, the strategic plan for 2037 aims to have a fleet of 200 aircraft that will carry 32 million passengers a year, with 73 new destinations in Europe, 12 new destinations in Africa, 13 new destinations in America and 10 new destinations in Asia and the Middle East.

Fleet expansion
To meet the needs arising from the launch of these new routes, the company has launched a tender for the acquisition of 188 aircraft, which will be progressively incorporated until 2037.
New B-787-9 Dreamliner and B-737 MAX aircraft have already been added, and the company plans to put new aircraft into service before the end of this year, increasing its current fleet of 62 to 72.
The acquisitions will enable it to expand its network with the opening of new domestic and international routes in Africa, Europe, South America and Asia, with destinations such as Los Angeles, St Petersburg, Sao Paulo, Toronto, Catania, Naples, Zurich, Munich, Beijing, Abuja and N’Djamena, among others.

Signing of agreements
The presentation of the new air routes between Casablanca, Tangier, Tetouan and Nador, and several Spanish cities, also served as a backdrop for the signing of two collaboration agreements.
The first of these agreements was signed between Royal Air Maroc and the Ibn Battuta Foundation. The agreement was signed by the airline’s vice-president, Amine El Farissi, and the foundation’s president, Mohamed Chaib Akhdim.
The second collaboration agreement links the Moroccan airline and the Centre Euro Africa, whose president, Divaika Kiemba, was responsible for signing the collaboration agreement with the vice-president of Royal Air Maroc.
