Spain, Portugal and Morocco are set to be linked by more than just their joint organisation of the 2030 World Cup. The French shipping company CMA CGM has launched a new service, called Iberimar, which connects the three countries via a weekly route operated by three container ships.
Iberimar
The new maritime freight route connects, on a weekly basis, a total of seven strategic ports located on the Atlantic coasts of the three countries: Vigo, Leixões, Lisbon, Casablanca, Agadir, Tangier Med and Algeciras.
The route, which will connect the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula with the Atlantic coast of Morocco, will be operated by three container ships, which will complete the full cycle in 27 days. These are the Songa Panther (IMO 9947732), with a nominal capacity of 1,781 containers, flying the Liberian flag and built in 2023; the Hansa Rotenburg, with a capacity of 1,740 containers, registered in Portugal and built in 2009; and the Contship Box, with a capacity of 1,496 containers, also registered in Liberia and built in 2009.
The new service replaces two previously separate routes, Agapome and Mosth1, combining them into a single service to improve efficiency and connectivity.
The aim is to capitalise on the strength of Morocco’s Atlantic ports, particularly Tangier Med, as a transport corridor between West Africa and Europe. The location of the Atlantic ports also facilitates connections with other routes from the Americas.
Furthermore, Iberimar streamlines the transport of goods in both directions and capitalises on the synergies and complementarity between ports as close as Tangier Med and Algeciras.
The route departs from Vigo and continues to the main Portuguese ports of Leixões and Lisbon, before reaching Casablanca and Agadir. From there, the vessels begin the return journey with stopovers at Tangier Med and Algeciras, ending once again at the port of Vigo.

Logistics corridor
This route creates a direct logistics corridor between the main industrial and commercial hubs of Spain, Portugal and Morocco, facilitating a more efficient flow of goods at a time when the three countries are busy preparing to jointly host the 2030 World Cup.
According to CMA CGM, the new service will reduce transit times and improve the competitiveness of supply chains, speeding up connections between Vigo and the Portuguese ports, as well as with Algeciras and Tangier Med. It also optimises direct links from Casablanca and Agadir to both ports on the Strait of Gibraltar.
