Morocco’s economy has been the subject of numerous reports, academic studies, and policy papers over the past two decades. Yet until recently, no single academic reference had compiled the country’s economic history, policy evolution, industrial transformation, and future challenges in one volume.
That gap is the focus of The Oxford Handbook of the Moroccan Economy, published by Oxford University Press as the first volume in its Oxford Handbooks series devoted exclusively to Morocco’s economy.
Edited by Moroccan economist Karim El Aynaoui, Executive President of the Policy Center for the New South and Executive Vice President of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, and Arkebe Oqubay, British Academy Global Professor at SOAS University of London, the handbook includes contributions from 53 scholars and policy practitioners across 34 chapters based on empirical research. According to the editors, more than 85% of the contributors are Moroccan.
The handbook traces Morocco’s economic development from independence through 2025, examining the country’s political economy, monetary and fiscal policy, banking system, international trade, regional development, education, labor markets, migration, poverty, gender, and climate transition. It also reviews key industries, including automotive manufacturing, aerospace, phosphates, agriculture, tourism, logistics, fisheries, and digital technologies.
A central theme is Morocco’s transition toward a more diversified, industrialized, and export-oriented economy. The editors argue that while the country has become one of Africa’s leading manufacturing hubs and invested heavily in infrastructure and renewable energy, it still faces significant challenges, including raising productivity, creating jobs, advancing technological capabilities, and avoiding the so-called middle-income trap.
Rather than advocating a single policy perspective, the contributors assess Morocco’s economic performance through empirical analysis while examining competing viewpoints and remaining policy challenges. According to the editors, the handbook is intended to provide a framework for both academic research and public policymaking.
Oxford University Press says the volume is intended for researchers, students, policymakers, international organizations, think tanks, and private-sector professionals seeking a broad reference on Morocco’s economy. The editors also expect it to serve as a teaching resource at Moroccan universities. The handbook has been published as an open-access title on Oxford Academic.
The Oxford Handbooks series is widely regarded as one of academia’s leading reference collections, with volumes serving as standard resources across numerous disciplines.
