Spain, Portugal, and Morocco announced their intention to enter a joint bid for the 2035 Women’s World Cup. Rafael Louzán, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), confirmed the news on Friday at the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid, according to the Spanish Press Agency EFE.
Louzán explained that hosting the Women’s World Cup would significantly boost the visibility of women’s sports. “What better way to showcase women’s sports than with the world’s leading sporting event, a World Cup,” he said.
This bid follows the successful joint candidacy for the 2030 Men’s World Cup, which will also include Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay for the opening matches.
Montse Tomé, Manager and Coach of Spain’s women’s national team, expressed her support for the idea, calling it a “great joy” to see Spain included in the potential hosting plans.
“It would be a huge boost for our football and for our female athletes,” she added. Tomé highlighted the growing visibility of women’s football in Spain, particularly after their triumph in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
