Muay Thai is rapidly gaining popularity in Morocco, as a recent masterclass organized in Rabat highlighted the growing cultural and sporting ties between Thailand and the North African kingdom.
The two-day event, held April 27-28 at Salle ElstilIssawi Indoor Hall in the Takaddoum district of Rabat, was organized by the Royal Thai Embassy in Rabat in partnership with the Royal Moroccan Federation of Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Savate and Similar Sports.
Hundreds of Moroccan coaches, referees and athletes attended the training sessions led by Thai Muay Thai masters Kru Anan Meksawan and Kru Suphan Chabairam.
The opening ceremony was attended by federation president Khalid El Quandili, Thai Ambassador Fabio Chinda and Adib Benbrahim, Morocco’s secretary of state in charge of housing.
Known as the “Art of Eight Limbs,” Muay Thai combines striking techniques using fists, elbows, knees and shins with deep-rooted traditions and rituals. During the masterclass, Moroccan participants were introduced not only to technical and tactical elements of the sport but also to the ceremonial Wai Kru ritual, which honors teachers, ancestors and the martial art’s heritage.
Organizers said the event reflected Morocco’s increasing interest in Muay Thai, particularly among young people drawn to the discipline, physical conditioning and international competitive opportunities associated with the sport.
The Royal Thai Embassy said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote Thai culture abroad through sports and cultural exchange, while Moroccan sports officials emphasized the federation’s role in expanding the country’s presence in international Muay Thai competitions.
The event also underscored the growing diplomatic relationship between Morocco and Thailand, using sport as a platform for cultural diplomacy and mutual understanding.
For many Moroccan athletes, the masterclass provided rare direct access to Thai instructors and internationally recognized training methods, while referees and coaches benefited from updated standards and techniques intended to help develop the sport nationwide.
As Morocco continues investing in youth development and sports diversification, organizers said Muay Thai is increasingly seen as more than a martial art, becoming a symbol of friendship and cultural connection between the two kingdoms.
