Morocco’s International Agricultural Fair (SIAM) opened Monday in Meknes with water scarcity and climate change at the center of this year’s agenda. The 17th SIAM runs from April 21 to 27 and brings together over 1,500 exhibitors from 70 countries.
The theme this year: “Agriculture and rural world: water at the heart of sustainable development,” reflects growing concerns over drought, declining rainfall, and rising water stress affecting Morocco.
Organizers say the fair offers a platform for collaboration on projects in agribusiness and rural development. It also promotes innovation, sustainable practices, and food security in a context of accelerating global climate challenges.
France is this year’s guest of honor. The selection highlights close bilateral cooperation in agriculture, food, fisheries, and forestry. French and Moroccan stakeholders are expected to explore joint projects and exchange know-how in these sectors.
Twelve thematic areas structure the 12.4-hectare exhibition space, covering agri-digital, water management, livestock and feed, agricultural machinery, agro-food industries, environmental technologies, and regional products. An entire zone is dedicated to scientific conferences.
Debates will feature experts and researchers on urgent issues such as water governance, smart irrigation systems, reuse of treated wastewater, and drone-based crop monitoring. Organizers say the goal is to find actionable solutions to keep Moroccan agriculture productive and resilient.
The fair builds on Morocco’s national strategies—Plan Maroc Vert (2008–2018) and Green Generation (2020–2030)—which have increased agricultural GDP and doubled agri-exports, creating tangible benefits for farmers and boosting investment.
Over one million visitors are expected this year. SIAM has become one of Africa’s largest agri-fairs and a key driver of Morocco’s agricultural modernization, both at the national and international levels.
