Instagram will begin notifying parents when teenagers repeatedly search for suicide or self-harm content, Meta announced on Thursday. The news comes as the social media company experiences intensifying legal scrutiny over youth safety.
The parental alerts are designed to ensure guardians are aware of potentially concerning behavior and can access support resources, Meta said in a statement. The company will begin rolling out the feature next week in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.
Under the system, parents will be notified if teens conduct repeated searches within a short period for phrases linked to suicide or self-harm, including direct terms such as “suicide” or language suggesting intent to harm oneself. Notifications may be delivered via email, text message, WhatsApp, or within Instagram.
The feature requires both the parent and teenager to enroll in Instagram’s parental supervision tools. Parents who receive alerts will see an explanation of the teen’s search activity along with links to support resources.
Meta described the move as “the right starting point,” acknowledging some alerts may not reflect genuine risk and saying thresholds will be refined based on feedback.
The rollout comes as Meta and rival platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, and Snap, face a wave of lawsuits alleging their products harm young users’ mental health.
