The 2026 World Cup group draw takes place Friday at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, setting the lineup for the expanded 48-team tournament that is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Morocco sits in Pot 2 under the FIFA ranking system. The team ranks 11th in the world. That position prevents an opening-round matchup with the very top-seeded teams, but it offers no guarantees of an easy grouping. A heavyweight from Pot 1 could still land in Morocco’s path.
This draw is a key step for the Atlas Lions as they prepare for their third straight World Cup. The team qualified for the 2018 tournament in Russia and made global headlines in 2022 with a historic run up to the semifinals in Qatar, the first African and Arab team to reach that stage.
Achraf Hakimi leads a squad that now carries both experience and rising expectations. The expanded format raises the stakes. For the first time, 48 teams will compete, reshaping the group stage and the road to the knockout rounds.
US President Donald Trump plans to attend the ceremony, according to organizers.
The ceremony airs at 6 p.m. Morocco time. Fans in Morocco can watch the draw live on Arryadia via TNT.
Broadcasters in Europe and online platforms will also carry the event, including TF1 Info, L’Équipe, RMC, M6 and FIFA’s official YouTube channel.
