Living in Morocco since 2013 has taught me that some of life’s most beautiful moments happen under canvas. Whether you’re dreaming of beach-side nights or mountain adventures, let me share everything you need to know about camping in this magnificent country for 2024.
Where to Camp in Morocco
Organized Campsites
Remember when I first discovered Camping Terre d’Ocean near Taghazout? It remains one of my favorite spots! At 110 MAD per vehicle, it offers great value with proper facilities. If you’re heading to the Essaouira area, Sidi Kaouki Campsite provides a more basic but charming experience for just 30 MAD per night.
Most organized sites are concentrated in the south, particularly around:
- Agadir
- Essaouira
- Tafraoute
What you’ll typically pay: Between 20-100 MAD per night, depending on location and amenities. Many sites offer extras like electricity, showers, and some even have pools and restaurants!
Wild Camping Adventures
Here’s something I’ve learned through experience – while wild camping along the Atlantic coast (especially between Essaouira and Agadir) isn’t encouraged, heading inland opens up amazing possibilities. Just remember to always seek permission if you’re on private property.
Pro Tip: Don’t be surprised if you receive friendly visits from locals or herders while wild camping. These encounters often lead to the most memorable experiences of your trip!
Best Times to Camp
One of the things I love about Morocco is that camping happens year-round. However, winter draws the biggest crowds, especially European visitors seeking sunshine. The most popular regions include:
- The High Atlas
- Desert fringes
- Atlantic beaches
Practical Considerations
For Motorhome Enthusiasts
Good news! Morocco welcomes motorhomes with open arms. Many campsites offer specific services for these vehicles.
Staying Connected
If you’re like me and need to stay connected (hello, fellow digital nomads!), you’ll find WiFi at most campgrounds and urban areas. For remote camping, just make sure to sort out mobile data beforehand.
Essential Tips
- Pack a dome tent – they work best on rocky terrain
- Always check with local authorities about permitted camping areas
- Consider using resources like Park4Night for finding campsites
My Personal Travel Tip: Want to ensure a smooth camping experience? Drop by local police or forest ranger stations to confirm camping permissions. It’s always better to check first!
