How KLM kept flying during the pandemic

The oldest widebody in the KLM fleet is PH-BQA, a Boeing 777-200 built in September 2003. Also based in Amsterdam, this aircraft typically operates one flight daily to destinations including Paramaribo (PBM), Edmonton (YEG), Tokyo (NRT) and Mumbai (BOM)

KLM’s Boeing 747 fleet

KLM operates three Boeing 747-400 freighters. The oldest of which is PH-CKA, which was built in March 2003. This aircraft frequently visits airports including Nairobi (NBO), Hahare (HRE), Johannesburg (JNB),  and Santiago (SCL). The three remaining KLM 747s are all approximately 1 month away from each other in age.

Narrowbodies

The newest narrowbody aircraft in service with KLM is PH-AXD, an Airbus A321neo built in December 2024. It operates 2-4 flights per day to destinations including Copenhagen (CPH), Berlin (BER) and Manchester (MAN).

The oldest narrowbody in the fleet is a Boeing 737-900 registered PH-BXO. Built in June 2001, this is one of the 5 larger 737 ‘Next Generation’ family aircraft operated by the airline. Based in Amsterdam (AMS), the aircraft operates 2-3 flights per day to destinations including Berlin (BER), Nantes (NTE), Manchester (MAN) and Stockholm (ARN)

Regional jets

KLM operates a total of 65 regional jets, all of which are Embraer models. Whilst the Embraer E-Jet family could be considered narrowbodies, we will consider them regional jets for the sake of this review.

The newest regional jet in service at KLM is PH-NXW, an Embraer E195-E2 built in 2024. This aircraft operates several flights per-day to destinations including Stavanger (SVG), Nice (NCE), Aberdeen (ABZ) and Frankfurt (FRA). With 22 aircraft in service, KLM is one of the largest European customers for the latest generation of Embraer’s E-Jet series.

The oldest regional jet in the fleet is PH-EZA, a previous generation Embraer E190 jet built in October 2008. This aircraft operates flights to airports including London City (LCY), Gdansk (GDN), Bologna (BLQ) and Hamburg (HAM).
