UNITED NATIONS (AP), March 27: Iran has formally raised alarm at the United Nations over what it describes as a potential assassination plot targeting its senior leadership, amid ongoing conflict and fragile diplomatic efforts.
In a letter dated Thursday, Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani warned of media reports suggesting that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf had been identified as possible assassination targets.
According to the letter, the reports indicated the existence of an “operational framework” contemplating attacks on “the highest-ranking political officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” It further claimed that any temporary suspension of such actions underscores that the threat remains “real, deliberate and ongoing.”
Tehran described any such plans as “state-sponsored terrorism,” urging the international community to take the allegations seriously.
The claims come against the backdrop of an escalating war that began with Israeli airstrikes, which Iran says killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with several senior military commanders.
Despite the intensifying conflict, diplomatic channels remain active. Qalibaf is reportedly being considered as a potential interlocutor in negotiations with the United States, while Araghchi has continued outreach efforts with international partners.
Pakistan is currently facilitating indirect exchanges between Tehran and Washington, with support from Egypt and Turkey, in an effort to broker a ceasefire and de-escalate the crisis.
