Morocco is on the verge of making history as the first Arab and African country to acquire Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II, the world’s most advanced stealth fighter jet, multiple defense-focused outlets reported.
Rabat is in the process of finalizing a landmark agreement with the United States to purchase 32 of the company’s F-35A aircraft, according to the reports. The deal is valued at around USD 17 billion over 45 years and includes maintenance and logistical support.
The move is a major leap in Morocco’s military modernization and would elevate the Royal Moroccan Air Force into an elite global tier. With unmatched stealth, advanced sensors, and multirole versatility, the F-35 would give Morocco air dominance capabilities on a par with NATO allies.
Beyond fighter jets, Morocco has been investing heavily in advanced weaponry, including Apache helicopters, Abrams tanks, MQ-9B drones, and reconnaissance satellites, reflecting its ambition to become a leading military power in North Africa.
The F-35 deal was prominently spotlighted during the Marrakech Air Show in late 2024, where Morocco showcased its expanding defense partnerships and hosted more than 300 global aerospace companies.
If the deal is finalized, the jets are expected to achieve full operational capability by 2035, strengthening Morocco’s interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces and cementing its role as Washington’s closest defense partner in Africa.
