Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Hakim Hajoui, has been elected first vice-president of the 34th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly, which began Monday at the UN agency’s headquarters in London, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
In his new role, Hajoui will help guide the assembly’s work and deliberations for the 2026–2027 period.
The assembly is the IMO’s highest decision-making body, responsible for approving the work program and budget, setting financial arrangements, and electing the IMO Council. It brings together all member states and meets every two years.
A Moroccan delegation led by Minister of Transportation and Logistics Abdessamad Kayouh is participating in the session, which takes place from November 24 to December 3, focusing on the future of the maritime sector amid technological shifts and major global economic challenges.
Member states will discuss the organization’s strategic priorities, adopt key resolutions, and elect a new IMO Council, where Morocco is running for a seat in Category C. Delegates will also review a consolidated text of the IMO Convention, proposed revisions to the rules of procedure, and measures governing relations with partner NGOs.
The assembly will consider the gradual adoption of Arabic as a working language to strengthen linguistic diversity within the organization.
Discussions will also cover the revised 2024–2029 strategic plan, which outlines priorities in maritime safety, marine environmental protection, technological innovation, and capacity-building. Member states will examine the 2026–2027 budget and work program.
