Medhi Benatia has resigned as director of French football club Olympique de Marseille (OM), just days after the departure of Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi, AP reported.
Benatia announced his decision in a post on Instagram on Sunday, citing tensions surrounding the club’s management. The former defender, who previously played for Bayern Munich and Juventus, said he had submitted his resignation to avoid becoming “an obstacle or a burden” to the club’s development.
In his statement, Benatia acknowledged a deteriorating atmosphere at the club, saying “he could not ignore the growing dissatisfaction and breakdown in relations.” He added that in Marseille, results are “the ultimate measure of success.”
OM drew 2-2 at home against Strasbourg on Saturday after surrendering a 2-0 lead and currently sits fourth in Ligue 1, 12 points behind RC Lens. The result followed a heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and a 3-0 loss to Club Brugge that ended the club’s Champions League campaign.
Until Paris Saint-Germain claimed the title last season, OM was the only French club to have won the Champions League. The southern club has won nine French league titles but has not lifted a trophy since winning the now-defunct League Cup in 2012.
