Former Morocco coach Walid Regragui said the national team may need “new energy” to sustain its development, speaking Thursday night during a ceremony honoring him at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maamoura.
Regragui told reporters his bond with the Atlas Lions stretches back decades, from his early years as a supporter to wearing the jersey as a player, later serving as an assistant to coach Rachid Taoussi, and eventually taking charge of the senior national team.
When he was appointed months before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Regragui said he inherited a group of talented players but one that needed a clear framework, a coherent playing identity and stronger cohesion.
His main objective, he said, was to develop the team and build a winning culture, adding that he worked with full commitment and a sense of responsibility.
Regragui said the work produced historic achievements, led by Morocco’s run to the World Cup semifinals, the first for an African and Arab side, as well as a place in the Africa Cup of Nations final after a 22 year gap and an eighth place FIFA ranking, Morocco’s best ever.
He thanked King Mohammed VI, crediting the monarch’s strategy of investing in infrastructure and governance reforms for Morocco’s football progress.
