Russia plans to stop oil exports from Kazakhstan to Germany through the Druzhba pipeline starting May 1, according to three industry sources who spoke to Reuters on Tuesday, a move that could tighten fuel supplies for Germany as the Iran war disrupts energy shipments from the Middle East.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said an adjusted oil export schedule has been sent to Kazakhstan and Germany.
A halt in Kazakh flows would add fresh uncertainty to Germany’s fuel market. The disruption comes only a few years after Berlin’s long energy relationship with Russia unraveled following the start of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022.
Kazakhstan exported about 2.15 million metric tonnes of oil to Germany through Russia’s Druzhba pipeline in 2025, or about 43,000 barrels per day. That total rose 44% from 2024. Exports reached 730,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2026.
A total halt would cut about 17% of the up to 12 million metric tonnes of oil processed each year by Germany’s PCK refinery in Schwedt, one of the country’s largest refineries. Fuel from the plant supplies nine out of ten cars in Berlin and Brandenburg.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said he did not know about a decision to stop the oil exports. “We will try to check it,” Peskov told reporters on a daily conference call.
Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry and the German government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Kazakhstan has supplied oil to PCK through the northern branch of Druzhba, which runs across Poland, since 2023. Ukrainian drone attacks on the Russian section of the pipeline have interrupted those supplies several times.
