Diesel prices in Morocco dropped by MAD 0.53 per liter as of Monday, 1 June, but they are still about MAD 3.46 higher than before the recent Iran war.
Across North Africa and parts of the MENA region, diesel prices have not moved in the same way, especially when comparing before the shock, the peak period, and today.
The difference is even more visible when looking at how regulated and liberalized systems handle fuel pricing.
According to Global Petrol Prices, Algeria and Tunisia have kept fuel prices unchanged since February 23, 2026, with both gasoline and diesel stable.
Meanwhile, liberalized markets have moved more directly with global oil prices, with Morocco alone seeing diesel up 38% and gasoline rising 22.8% over the same period.
Here are the diesel prices in North Africa over the past three months
According to Global Petrol Prices, prices in Algeria remained unchanged at about $0.23 per liter (31.00 DZD), with no movement from pre-war levels through the peak period to 25 May.
The same pattern was seen in Tunisia, where diesel stayed stable at about $0.73 per liter (2.21 TND), with no change over the past three months.
This is mainly because Algeria covers its own fuel needs, which also helps keep supply stable in neighboring Tunisia through the shared land border.
In Morocco, diesel is about $1.52 per liter (MAD 13.97) now, down from $1.56 (MAD 15.49) one month ago, but still above pre-war levels of around $1.08 (MAD 10.76).
For Egypt, diesel stood at $0.42 per liter (20.50 Egyptian pounds), unchanged from one month ago but up around 17.1% compared to three months ago, from $0.36 (which is 17.50 pounds).
Meanwhile, in Mauritania and Libya, no updated official diesel price data is available.
Net energy importers and the way they handle global oil shocks:
When looking at net energy importers with limited domestic production alone, the main question is how fuel markets are set up and who absorbs the Hormuz shock, whether the state or consumers at the pump.
In Morocco, this is reflected in closely watched fuel prices that directly affect transport costs for households, taxis, freight, and small businesses that depend on diesel.
Since the 2015 liberalization, prices have been set by the market rather than the state, making them more sensitive to global oil changes.
For example, a private car with a 50-liter fill-up, which used to cost around MAD 525.50 before the war, rose to MAD 775.00 at the peak and is now about MAD 698.50, while a petit taxi using around 40 liters per fill moved from MAD 4,204 per month to MAD 6,200, then to about MAD 5,588.
Meanwhile in Jordan, diesel is $1.11 per liter, up 9.7% from one month ago and 21.5% from three months ago, according to Global Petrol Prices.
Prices are regulated by the state, with the government covering part of the cost through subsidies.
In recent months, it has also frozen parts of fuel taxes, including around 41% on 90-octane gasoline and about 22% on 95-octane in April, followed by roughly 16% on 90-octane in May.
Total government fuel support during the crisis has reached about $240 million. For June, support is expected at around $41 million, plus $4.2 million for the industrial sector.
In Turkey, diesel was $1.71 per liter, down 6.5% from one month ago ($1.83) but still up 11% from three months ago ($1.54).
Although the market is liberalized, the government has temporarily reintroduced a sliding fuel pricing system, using tax cuts of up to 75% to limit the impact of global price spikes on consumers.
