Morocco’s head coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, has expressed mixed feelings of satisfaction and regret after his team’s 1-1 draw with Brazil in their opening Group C match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, saying the Atlas Lions delivered a strong performance but could have achieved more, according to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).
Ouahbi welcomed his team’s display against a Brazilian side he described as “physically powerful, strong in the penalty area, and inclined toward direct play.”
Ouahbi highlighted Morocco’s ability to control possession during key phases of the match and dictate the tempo against one of the tournament favorites.
“We found spaces in depth and imposed our tempo,” he said, adding that his team must learn “how to finish matches the same way we start them.”
The coach defended his players’ mindset, insisting that the result should not be viewed as a disappointment.
“I am proud of them. This is not a disappointment,” he said. “Even in the dressing room, they were not overly happy because they knew we could have done better.”
Ouahbi also applauded the performances of young midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi and fellow midfielder Neil El Aynaoui.
“I know Ayoub’s qualities very well, so I was not surprised by his performance,” he said.
He described El Aynaoui’s display as being of a high standard and highlighted the balance between youth and experience in Morocco’s midfield.
Both players were making their World Cup debuts and were among Morocco’s standout performers against Brazil.
Regarding goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Ouahbi said the player suffered only a minor shoulder bruise and was doing well.
