Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten praised the atmosphere surrounding Morocco’s World Cup victory over the Netherlands, saying the dramatic match showed how sport could bring communities together.
Morocco eliminated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties in Monterrey on Monday after the round-of-32 match ended 1-1 following extra time.
Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead in the 72nd minute before Issa Diop headed Morocco level in stoppage time, forcing the match into extra time and then a penalty shootout.
Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s penalty before Ismael Saibari converted the decisive kick to send Morocco into the round of 16.
“After a thrilling match between Oranje and the Atlas Lions, the World Cup is unfortunately over for the Netherlands,” Jetten wrote on his official social-media account.
He said it was “great to see how sport brings people together,” praising the atmosphere created by Dutch supporters and the celebrations among members of the Moroccan-Dutch community.
Jetten also referred to the support shown to Gakpo, who scored days after he and his partner announced the loss of their unborn child.
The Dutch prime minister congratulated the national team on its tournament and wished Morocco success in the next round.
Morocco will face co-hosts Canada in Houston on Saturday for a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
The victory continued Morocco’s run in the tournament after the Atlas Lions advanced from Group C behind Brazil.
