LeBron James announced on Friday that he will join the Philadelphia 76ers for what he said will be the final chapter of his NBA career, according to Reuters.
In a series of social media posts, James said his decision was driven by his desire to continue competing at the highest level.
James said that he believes he can help Philadelphia become a championship team and said he is excited to begin the next stage of his career with the franchise.
The 41-year-old did not disclose the terms of his contract. ESPN reported that James agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option, a significant reduction from the more than $50 million he earned with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
James spent the past eight seasons with the Lakers, leading the team to the 2020 NBA championship after previous stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat.
In Philadelphia, the four-time NBA champion will join a roster featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and recently acquired Jaylen Brown.
The 76ers reached the 2026 playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s seventh seed through the play-in tournament before losing to the eventual champion New York Knicks in the second round.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro welcomed James by declaring July 24, 2026, as “LeBron James Day” in the state.
James said he considered retiring after the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs in May but ultimately decided he still wanted to continue playing.
Several teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Minnesota Timberwolves, were reportedly interested in signing the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player.
James is one of the league’s top performers despite his age. Last season, he became the NBA’s all-time leader in career regular-season games played and earned a record 22nd consecutive All-Star selection after averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 games.
He has won four NBA championships, four NBA MVP awards, and four NBA Finals MVP awards during a career that has included two stints with Cleveland, four seasons with the Miami Heat, and eight seasons with the Lakers.
