The African Development Bank (AfDB) has lauded Morocco’s automotive industry as a continental success in its 2025 Annual Development Effectiveness Review (ADER), highlighting Morocco’s strategic investments and policies that have made the country Africa’s automotive sector.
The report entitled “Supporting Africa’s Resilience and Driving Transformation” said that Morocco’s implementation of the Industrial Acceleration Plan (2014–2020) has been instrumental in attracting major automotive groups to the country.
It added that this initiative, supported by strategic investments in infrastructure and industrial policies encouraging relocation, has led to a significant increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector, from 15% in 2010 to 37% in 2019.
In 2023, Morocco became Africa’s leading car manufacturer and exporter, with the manufacturing sector contributing 15% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). AfDB noted that Morocco is among the few African nations to have developed capabilities in both automobile production and renewable energy technologies, while high-tech industries continue to dominate imports in Africa.
The 2025 ADER report highlighted the AfDB’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth across the continent. The report evaluates the Bank’s contributions to its top five priorities, which include enhancing the quality of life for the people of Africa, integrating on the continental level, industrializing Africa, improving the quality of life for the people, and feeding the continent.
The AfDB’s support for Morocco’s automotive industry is part of a broader strategy to bolster economic resilience and promote inclusive growth through strategic investments in key areas.
