OCP Green Water, a subsidiary of Morocco’s state-owned phosphate giant OCP Group, has launched operations of a major desalinated water pipeline connecting the coastal Jorf Lasfar desalination plant to the inland mining hub of Khouribga, according to a statement on Tuesday.
Spanning over 200 kilometers, the project is a major milestone in Morocco’s push for water independence as a seven-year drought continues to create water stress and threaten crops and livelihoods, the statement explains.
The pipeline will deliver up to 80 million cubic meters of desalinated water per year, primarily to supply OCP’s mining operations in Khouribga, home to the world’s largest phosphate mine, while also meeting the city’s potable water needs and supporting local agricultural irrigation.
The new pipeline will ensure adequate water supply “for OCP’s industrial operations and help ensure drinking water for the local population,” said Ahmed Zniber, CEO of OCP Green Water. He added that the project is valued at MAD 5 billion (USD 500 million) and is expected to reduce reliance on conventional water sources by 80%.
OCP’s strategy, spearheaded through its Green Water subsidiary, is intended to achieve full autonomy in non-conventional water use. The company asserts that it has now met that target two years ahead of its 2027 goal.
Hanane Mourchid, Director of Sustainability and Innovation at OCP, said that the project is central to the group’s green investment plan and its national water strategy. Beyond its environmental benefits, the pipeline project has already generated significant socio-economic benefits. It created the equivalent of 1,300 day jobs over two years, 85% of which involved local labor, and will provide 100 permanent operational jobs.
With an installed capacity of 320 million cubic meters in 2025, OCP Green Water already supplies drinking water to cities including Safi, El Jadida, and southern Casablanca. With expansion plans to reach 610 million cubic meters by 2027, the company will extend services to other urban centers, including Marrakech.
The entire desalination and water transfer system is powered by 100% renewable energy in accordance with OCP’s circular water model, supported by the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), INNOVX, engineering firm JESA, and international partners.
