Republic of Korea (ROK) President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump will meet in Washington, D.C., on August 25 for their first one-on-one summit, the first visit by President Lee to the US since taking office in June, The Korea Times announced.
The two leaders will explore ways to strengthen the Korea-US alliance amid shifting global security and economic challenges. According to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, discussions will include reinforcing the countries’ combined defense posture, advancing peace and denuclearization efforts on the Korean Peninsula, and deepening economic cooperation in strategic industries such as semiconductors, batteries, and shipbuilding.
Trump is expected to request increased South Korean defense spending and support for “alliance modernization,” potentially involving adjustments to the US troop presence in Korea and expanded military roles beyond North Korea deterrence.
Finalizing tariff deal details will also take center stage. South Korea plans over USD 350 billion in investments in the US, along with a new “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again” initiative, a joint shipbuilding effort with USD 150 billion allocated. Lee might visit a US shipbuilding site tied to Korean investments during the trip.
South Korean industry leaders will likely unveil major investment projects at the summit, The Korea Post reported. Samsung Electronics aims to expand its semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas, boosting its US investment to USD 37 billion. Samsung recently secured significant supply contracts with Tesla and Apple, underscoring its growing role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
SK Hynix is building a USD 3.87 billion semiconductor plant in Indiana, targeting production by 2028 and creating around 1,000 jobs. Meanwhile, South Korea’s top battery makers, LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On, are accelerating US production expansion with multiple plants across several states, driven by tariff pressures and US subsidy policies.
Hyundai Motor Group announced a USD 21 billion investment plan through 2028, covering automotive manufacturing, steel production, and new technology cooperation. Korean Air secured supply contracts worth USD 32.7 billion with Boeing and GE Aerospace to strengthen its long-term competitiveness amid growing air travel demand.
The Korea-US summit will reinforce economic ties, support supply chain stability, and promote high-tech industrial collaboration. The office of the President confirmed that additional trip details, including possible participation by Korean business leaders, will be announced later.
