A powerful exhibition known as “Beneath the Rubble, Dreams Persist” has taken root at the Art Gallery in Education City, showcasing the resilience and hope of artists from Gaza. Open until September 28, this impactful event features the works of over a dozen Palestinian artists, many of whom continue to create in the midst of a devastating conflict.
Curated by Abdul Rahman Anwar and Amna Al Quradaghi from VCUarts Qatar, with backing from Qatar Red Crescent, this exhibit draws on deep emotional wells. Amna was inspired to create the exhibition after seeing a video featuring Shaheed Mohammed Sami, a young Gaza artist whose aspiration to open an art gallery seemed almost unattainable amidst the chaos of his environment. This revelation ignited a desire to uplift not just Sami, but the many artists in Gaza with dreams that persist in the face of adversity.
The exhibition conveys the tragic realities these artists endure; at least seven have lost their lives to the conflict. Yet their art continues to thrive, preserving the essence of Palestinian culture and expressing profound personal and shared struggles. Each piece serves as a potent reminder of dreams held in the hearts of those living under the rubble.
Among the notable artworks is one by Mohammed Sami Qreqe, reflecting on Gaza’s International Airport, a once-proud symbol of progress now lost to conflict. His work captures both the construction of the airport and the emotional scars it left behind. Another compelling piece, “Displacement Diaries” by Ahmed Al Daalsa, explores the anguish of displacement, depicting a yearning for a brighter future.
The exhibition isn’t just about showcasing art; it’s an act of defiance against those who attempt to silence the voices of Gaza’s artists. Al Quradaghi articulates the intent behind the exhibition: to convey gratitude, resilience, and determination amidst overwhelming challenges. The stories of these artists are meant to resonate outside of their borders, reminding the world that they are not forgotten and that their dreams still endure.
Anwar emphasizes the impact and significance of these narratives, highlighting the shared care for the artists and their struggles. Despite the barriers imposed by the external world, through this exhibition, the hope is that the spirit of Gaza’s creativity shines brightly, illuminating the path forward.
