Ongoing protests are focusing attention on an online travel agency due to allegations of animal exploitation in activities they promote, including elephant rides. Activists from World Animal Protection recently demonstrated outside a major event attended by the company’s co-founder, distributing pamphlets to raise awareness about what they describe as harmful tourism practices.
The activist group contends that the agency allows operators to list experiences that exploit animals, including a controversial report they released earlier this year. In response to the protests, a spokesperson for the travel agency pointed to their responsible tourism guidelines, emphasizing that they require suppliers to adhere to safety protocols and remove activities that do not align with their policies. They stated their commitment to evolving standards in order to ensure compliance among the experiences they offer.
In contrast, World Animal Protection has highlighted that other large travel platforms have paused sales of tickets for captive wildlife entertainment venues after collaborating to establish animal welfare policies. They expressed disappointment that their attempts to engage the travel agency in dialogue for nearly two years have been largely ignored, and they condemned the continued availability of what they see as cruel experiences involving wild animals.
Recent listings for elephant rides, labeled as one of the cruelest options for tourism, have drawn particular scrutiny. The issue of elephant tourism has attracted significant attention, and discussions about responsible travel practices are becoming increasingly vital in the industry.
