Air Canada announced Thursday that it will cancel all flights starting Saturday morning unless a last-minute deal is reached with its flight attendants, after receiving strike notice from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
Chief operating officer Mark Nasr said the airline would begin canceling dozens of flights Thursday, with 500 more expected to be grounded by Friday, before a full suspension takes effect.
The strike could affect nearly 130,000 passengers daily and cost the carrier up to $50 million per day.
Talks between the airline and CUPE have stalled over wages and unpaid work time. Federal Employment Minister Patty Hajdu urged both parties to continue negotiations with mediators available “24 hours a day until an agreement is reached.”
CUPE has rejected binding arbitration, accusing the company of trying to undermine union rights.
