Vietnam is marking 80 years of independence by highlighting its rapid growth and strengthening its partnership with Qatar in trade, culture, and diplomacy.
Once scarred by war and isolation, Vietnam has emerged as one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies, marking its transformation from conflict to global engagement.
Nguyen Huy Hiep, Ambassador of Vietnam to Qatar, described this milestone as “a moment to honour resilience and look forward”.
“The triumph of the August Revolution in 1945 gave us independence and freedom. Today, Vietnam is not only a regional player but also a trusted partner in global cooperation,” he added.
Despite relatively young ties, relations between Doha and Hanoi have strengthened steadily.
Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1993. Vietnam opened its embassy in Doha in 2008, followed by Qatar’s embassy in Hanoi in 2010, with the first Qatari resident ambassador arriving in 2011.
In 2023, both countries celebrated 30 years of formal relations, highlighting progress in political, economic, and cultural cooperation.
High-level visits have cemented the partnership, including the Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Qatar in October 2024 and Qatar’s participation in major events hosted by Vietnam in 2025, such as the P4G Summit in April and the 80th anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Public Security in August.
Trade remains the backbone of cooperation. Bilateral exchange reached USD 860 million in 2024, a rise of USD 100 million compared with 2023. Qatar mainly exports liquefied natural gas, plastics, and fertilisers, while Vietnam supplies seafood, fruits, electronics, and ceramics.
“The growth rate is proof of untapped potential. We are now moving beyond traditional goods to sectors such as health, pharmaceuticals, and high-tech agriculture,” said Ambassador Nguyen.
Le Thi Thu Ha, head of the embassy’s political and economic section, noted that Qatar’s knowledge-based growth strategy aligns with Vietnam’s green and digital transformation agenda.
“We see potential in IT, cybersecurity, logistics, and renewable energy collaboration,” she said.
The embassy works closely with Qatari institutions, including the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Public Health, Mwani Qatar, Qatar Tourism, the Qatar Free Zones Authority, and Qatar Airways, as well as private enterprises, to expand trade, logistics, services, skilled labour cooperation, and two-way investment.
Beyond economics, cultural and educational links are expanding. Qatar offers scholarships for Vietnamese students to study Arabic, while cultural exchanges are flourishing.
First Secretary Le Thanh Son announced: “This September, our exhibition Vietnam’s Soul will open at Katara, showcasing our art and heritage. These cultural initiatives deepen understanding and strengthen bilateral ties.”
Vietnam’s trajectory reflects resilience and ambition. From a war-torn nation to a USD 476 billion economy ranked 32nd globally, the country has reduced poverty from over 60% in 1986 to less than 2% today.
With a strategic vision to 2030 and 2045, Vietnam aims to become a high-income, developed nation while advancing global trade, technology, and sustainability.
Ambassador Nguyen concluded: “Just as Vietnam rose from hardship to prosperity, we are confident our partnership with Qatar will continue to grow. Together, our countries can contribute to stability, sustainable development, and shared prosperity in Asia and the Middle East.”
Vietnam is also preparing to assume the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2026, positioning itself as a stronger voice in regional and international affairs.
