Morocco’s Airports Authority (ONDA) opened a smart baggage transfer center at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport, a major step in its push to become a leading global air transit hub, according to a statement from the airport on Tuesday.
The newly inaugurated “Fast Baggage Center” spans over 15,000 square meters and features automation technology designed to double baggage handling capacity. The system now processes up to 6,000 bags per hour, with average handling time slashed to just five minutes. The substantial improvement intends to reduce delays and improve the passenger experience.
ONDA officials say the facility will significantly streamline baggage transfers, particularly for connecting flights through Casablanca, which is a key hub between Africa, Europe, and beyond by 2030.
“This investment directly supports the growth of Royal Air Maroc’s international operations, especially on high-volume African routes,” ONDA said in a statement. “It’s a vital part of our broader strategy to modernize Morocco’s airport infrastructure and meet future passenger demands.”
The system includes automated sorters, explosive detection scanners, and smart indexing stations for oversized baggage, all designed to enhance security, efficiency, and sustainability. According to ONDA, the new facility will cut energy consumption by 15% compared to older systems.
In addition to optimizing international transfers, the new facility is expected to relieve pressure on the traditional baggage circuits, reducing wait times for arriving passengers.
Although fully operational, ONDA noted that the system will undergo a brief adjustment phase to fine-tune performance. Airport teams are currently overseeing a gradual and secure rollout of the center.
The launch comes just months ahead of Morocco’s hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the country ramping up airport modernization efforts to handle an expected surge in regional and international travel.
