FIFA has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate incidents involving Argentina players and staff following the 2026 World Cup final against Spain on Sunday, while also examining the team’s celebrations after its semifinal victory over England.
The investigation follows a confrontation between players from both teams after the final whistle at New York New Jersey Stadium. Spain won the match 1-0 after Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute to secure Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title.
According to the BBC, some Argentine players were involved in exchanges with Spanish players after the match. Leandro Paredes was initially reported to have received a red card after the final whistle, but FIFA later said the entry resulted from an error in its match information system and confirmed that no dismissal had been officially issued. Footage showed confrontations involving Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, Leandro Paredes, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala.
The investigation will determine whether disciplinary measures are required against individuals involved in the incidents.
FIFA is also examining Argentina’s celebrations after their semi-final victory over England, where players displayed a banner bearing the words “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates as “The Falklands are Argentine.”
Under FIFA regulations, political statements made by players or teams can lead to disciplinary proceedings, with those involved potentially facing sanctions such as suspensions.
The same banner was brought up in 2014 in a friendly match against Slovenia, which led FIFA to fine Argentina £20,000.
FIFA has not yet announced possible sanctions or a timetable for the conclusion of the proceedings.
