Meat prices in Morocco are straining households’ purchasing power even as the country steps up imports to stabilize the market.

Shoppers told Barlamane.com that many families, especially those with low or middle incomes, are struggling to buy red meat, which has become significantly more expensive over the past few years. Many called on the authorities to intervene and curb what they describe as price manipulation by powerful market actors.

In local markets, domestic meat is now priced at just over MAD 100 per kilogram, while imported meat sells for a little over MAD 70 per kilogram. But even with cheaper imported options, the cost still weighs heavily on purchasing power.

Morocco has become increasingly dependent on meat imports after several consecutive years of severe drought depleted livestock herds. During the first half of 2025, the country’s meat imports from the EU rose by a staggering annual rate of 25.7%, according to data from the EU Commission.

The chronic drought has reduced the availability of animal feed and pushed domestic prices upward. In response, the government launched a MAD 6.2 billion (USD 671 million) recovery plan in May aimed at restocking herds and supporting breeders.

With rising temperatures and increasingly erratic rainfall continuing to strain the agricultural sector, many Moroccan families fear that meat prices may remain high despite the surge in imports.
