Indra Group has reinforced its leadership in the development of critical technologies and innovation for European defence after presenting the results of the R&D initiative FaRADAI (Frugal and Robust AI for Defence Advanced Intelligence). Funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF), this multilateral programme aims to design frugal artificial intelligence solutions —optimised to operate within resource-constrained environments— that are robust and explainable in high-demand operational contexts.

The international consortium, established in 2022 and coordinated by the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), brings together 38 partners from 13 European Union member states, assembling the continent’s leading defence and technology players.

During a meeting held in Thessaloniki, representatives from EU Ministries of Defence and officials from the European Commission were presented with the project’s conclusions, focused on solving operational challenges such as decision-making under uncertainty, system technical resilience, and human-machine collaborative teaming.

Within FaRADAI, Indra Group has spearheaded the development and validation of critical use cases targeted at complex tactical operations. This capability allows systems to identify vehicles, personnel, and infrastructure, while analysing spatial relationships to assess threat levels and dynamically recalculate safe navigation paths when facing tactical contingencies.

These capabilities rest upon the human-in-the-loop architecture adopted by Indra Group. Under this framework, artificial intelligence functions as an analytical accelerator that delivers transparency, dependability, and speed to the decision loop, ensuring that command authority, critical judgment, and ultimate oversight over every tactical action remain strictly in human hands.

European strategic autonomy and the IndraMind platform

Participation in FaRADAI forms an integral part of Indra Group’s roadmap to drive technological sovereignty and cognitive superiority across European defence. In this domain, the group deploys IndraMind as its sovereign, cyber-resilient AI suite, engineered for modular integration into multi-domain command structures compliant with NATO interoperability standards.

The multinational currently embeds artificial intelligence across land defence platforms, including 360-degree vision suites for armoured vehicles, spanning LSAS (Local Situational Awareness System) sensors and See-Through vision systems. Enhanced by IndraMind, these systems process live video feeds to detect and classify personnel and platforms, discriminate between friendly and hostile assets, and generate early warnings of immediate perimeter hazards for combat crews.

Through these advancements under the European Defence Fund, where it ranks among the top three participating industrial leaders, Indra Group continues to consolidate the EU’s industrial and technological ecosystem, accelerating the path toward collective strategic autonomy in high-end operations.
