Maroc Telecom, Morocco’s largest telecommunication company, has joined forces with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private-sector arm, to expand high-speed mobile connectivity in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to a statement from Maroc Telecom on Thursday.
Through this new partnership, IFC will provide a total of €370 million in financing to support Maroc Telecom’s subsidiaries in Chad and Mali, and accelerate the rollout of 4G services and improve digital access for millions.
“With over 57 million customers outside Morocco, our strategy focuses on expanding mobile data access to bridge the digital divide,” Maroc Telecom CEO Mohamed Benchaâboun said.
“This partnership with IFC will significantly improve network coverage and service quality in Chad and Mali, enabling wider 4G adoption and advancing economic development.”
The CEO also pointed to broader impacts, noting that better mobile internet will unlock new services like Mobile Money, a critical tool for promoting financial inclusion in underserved regions.
“Wherever Maroc Telecom operates, we work hand in hand with local stakeholders to ensure that economic performance delivers social impact and supports sustainable development,” he added.
IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop framed the investment as part of IFC’s mission to support private sector-led growth in fragile and underserved markets. “Backing regional champions like Maroc Telecom is a strategic priority, especially in fragile areas where digital infrastructure unlocks jobs, innovation, and stability.”
The initiative furthers the African Union’s goal of building a continent-wide digital market by 2030 and highlights the growing importance of cross-border investments in Africa’s digital transformation.
Maroc Telecom, majority-owned by UAE-based group e&, operates in ten African countries under the Moov Africa brand and serves more than 79 million customers, including 57 million outside Morocco. Its strong presence across West and Central Africa is positioning Maroc Telecom as a key player in the region’s digital infrastructure development.
