The Moroccan market has become one of the fastest-growing destinations for Russian wheat exports in recent seasons, alongside countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Libya, Tunisia, and Tanzania, according to Dmitry Sergeyev, chairman of the Russian Union of Grain Exporters and Producers.
In an interview with the Russian news agency Interfax, Sergeyev said that Africa, which imports around 60 million tons of wheat annually, represents a strategic and rapidly growing market for Moscow.
Russian wheat, currently exported to some 40 African countries, now accounts for a third of the continent’s wheat market.
“Russia has proven to be a reliable supplier of wheat to African nations,” Sergeyev stated, noting that exports to the continent have increased by a third over the past six agricultural seasons, from approximately 15 million tons between 2018/2019 and 2020/2021, to around 20 million tons in the 2023/2024 season. Among the standout markets driving this growth, he highlighted Morocco as a success story for the sector.
Africa’s wheat market holds significant potential, Sergeyev added, citing rapid population growth, an expanding middle class, and improving purchasing power across the continent. However, he stressed that sustaining and increasing Russian wheat exports to Africa would require a more integrated approach across the supply chain — from logistics and storage to processing.
Looking ahead, the union expects exports to Morocco to rise further over the next three years. Overall, Russia aims to export up to 53 million tons of grain by the end of the current season, the fourth-highest total in the country’s modern history.
Sergeyev also noted that over 130 million tons of grain were exported across the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons combined, reinforcing Russia’s position as the world’s top wheat exporter, even as overall export volumes are expected to dip slightly this season.
He attributed this anticipated drop to reduced demand from key buyers compared to previous years. Turkey, for example, is expected to import just 3.5 million tons this season, down from 9.4 million last year, while Iran has halved its wheat purchases from 2.6 million tons to 1 million.
Despite ongoing financial and logistical challenges linked to Western sanctions, Russian exporters have adapted, Sergeyev said. He added that global grain trade remains volatile and shaped by seasonal production patterns — with reduced output expected in Europe this year, while Australia and Argentina have enjoyed strong harvests, boosting their competitiveness in Asian markets.
