Morocco is moving ahead with plans for a National Museum of Archaeology and Earth Sciences that authorities say will rank among the world’s leading museums dedicated to natural and human history, as Rabat accelerates a broader strategy to position itself as a regional cultural capital.
Culture Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid told parliament on Tuesday that the future museum would present Morocco’s geological, archaeological and civilizational history through interactive technologies and contemporary exhibition design, linking prehistoric discoveries to the kingdom’s wider historical evolution.
The project forms part of a wider cultural infrastructure drive reshaping Rabat through new museums, theaters, libraries and creative economy investments ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup and amid Morocco’s efforts to expand tourism beyond traditional beach destinations.
Bensaid said technical, architectural and scientific studies linked to the museum had already been completed, with specialized teams selected to oversee construction, scenography and heritage preservation.
Morocco has increasingly used archaeology and heritage diplomacy as part of its international cultural positioning strategy, particularly after global attention surrounding discoveries including the oldest known Homo sapiens remains at Jebel Irhoud and some of the world’s oldest known ornamental beads near Essaouira.
The minister said the museum would serve as a reference space showcasing Morocco’s scientific and historical contributions while helping preserve archaeological and geological collections.
The announcement comes as Rabat expands its museum ecosystem under the National Foundation of Museums, which has overseen the modernization and opening of several major institutions in recent years, including the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the National Jewellery Museum.
Bensaid also defended the government’s youth camping reform program, saying authorities had identified 90 recommendations covering infrastructure upgrades, governance, safety standards and training for educational camps nationwide.
